Cleanup Checklist

Here's your last minute checklist for Saturday's Great Florida Cleanup in Starke and the Osceola National Forest:

Invite, encourage and urge your friends & family to come to the cleanup with you.
Call (386) 431-1000 to pre-register. Pre-registration helps us ensure that we have enough supplies on hand for everyone. Pre-registration is not a requirement only a suggestion!!!
Secure your transportation. KTB will not provide transportation for volunteers to cleanup sites.
Wear appropriate clothing. It is advised that volunteers wear sturdy clothing and thick soled shoes for additonal safety. Caps or sun visors also provide additional protection from the sun. Leather work gloves will also provide another layer of protection for you during the cleanup.
Arrive at 8am on Saturday. Volunteers should be at the Bradford County Fairgrounds or the Osceola National Forest District Ranger's Office in Olustee at 8am.
Saturday morning weather. Event will be held Saturday morning. If it is raining HEAVILY please call (386) 431-1000 to find out the status of each event.
The Great Florida Cleanup is a great way for you to show your pride in your county and your national forest as well as your concern for our environment.

Union Cleanup RESCHEDULED!

Due to rain the Union County Great Florida Cleanup has been rescheduled to next Saturday, April 30th. We know that many may already have plans that will keep you from participating and we certainly understand. However, there may be some of you who can now attend and we will certainly be glad to have you join us.

We do want to emphasize pre-registering yourself or your group for this event. This morning we were able to call the pre-registered groups to inform them of the change. However, we were unable to reach those who had not pre-registered and had to inform them at the park. Please understand, pre-registration is NOT required it just help us with planning and notification. So, even if you make a last minute decision to participate – come on down, we need your help.

Union County Great Florida Cleanup

Union Cleanup is Saturday

The Union County Great Florida Cleanup will be held this Saturday, April 23rd. This is a 1/2 day volunteer litter pick-up to promote proper handling of litter, recyclables & solid waste.

Volunteers should come to Lakeside Park in Lake Butler at 8am. Participants will be briefed on safety and recycling and then will begin the cleanup. Everyone will return to the park at noon and be served a free pizza lunch. T-shirts made from recycled soda bottles will given to each volunteers while supplies last. Some really great door prizes will also be given away, but you must be present to win. All of the activities will end around 1pm.

Volunteers MUST have their own transportation. Participants should also wear sturdy clothing and thick soled shoes. KTB will provide safety vests and trash bags.

Employees of the Union County Solid Waste Department and New River Solid Waste Association will help transport waste & recyclables to the park from the pick-up locations.

Volunteers are encouraged to call (386) 431-1000 to pre-register for the event although it is not a requirement. Pre-registration gives coordinators an idea about how much supplies will be needed on hand.

The cleanup is also a great way for students to earn volunteer service hours for school and scholarships.

If it is raining Saturday morning you can call the New River Solid Waste Association office at (386) 431-1000 to find out if the event is continuing or is cancelled. Someone will be available to answer your call at 7am. It will have to be heavily raining for the event to be cancelled.

Talkin' Trash

Mrs. Faulk's 4th grade class learn how lined landfills protect our water supply. The presentation was given today to six 4th grade classes at Lake Butler Elementary School by NRSWA Recycling Coordinator James Croft.

Board Meeting Cancelled

The New River Solid Waste Association Board of Directors meeting scheduled for this Thursday, April 14th has been cancelled. The next regular meeting of the board will be on Thursday, May 12, 2005 at 6pm. The meetings are held in the Board Room of the administration building.

Award Winning Exhibit

"Service with a Smile" is the theme for the 2005 Bradford County Fair in Starke, Florida this week.

For the second year in a row the First Place Award in the Commercial Booth Division went to New River Solid Waste Association & Keep Tri-counties Beautiful.

The booth entitled "Award Winning Service With A Smile" features a "smiley face" Iggy the Igloo, photos of the services provided by the two agencies and examples of the awards that has been won. These awards include:

2004 SWANA Gold Excellence Award for the best managed landfill in North America (NRSWA)

Keep Florida Beautiful Bright Spot Award (KTB)

Keep Tri-counties Beautiful Grand Champion Beautifier Award (NRSWA)

2004 First Place Commercial Division Bradford County Fair (NRSWA/KTB)

First Place in Commercial Division 2004 Lake Butler Christmas Parade Float (NRSWA/KTB)

Various other awards for Christmas parade floats and other fair exhibits
The exhibit can be visited through Saturday night in Building 3 at the Bradford County Fairgrounds, US301 north of Starke, Florida.
